Winemaking
This is the inaugural Japanese wine crafted by Genki Iwasaki, founder of the Salon des Vins Japonais in Burgundy, where he has long championed the appeal of Japanese wine on the global stage. After seven years of dedicated training in Burgundy, he earned the title of French state-certified oenologist and returned in July 2024 to his hometown of Ohira Town in Tochigi City. Ohira has been a recognised grape-growing region since the Meiji era. Sourcing 1.2 tonnes of Muscat Bailey A from a local table-grape grower, he produced this first Japanese vintage.

The 2024 growing season was marked by intense heat and significant rainfall, giving the vintage a distinctive character. During véraison in August, rainfall reached 352mm for the month, presenting considerable challenges in the vineyard. However, as conditions improved in September, the harvest dates — 27 September and 1 October — were carefully chosen to preserve the fruit’s natural freshness and vibrant acidity at their best.

In the winery, Iwasaki approached the wine with the delicacy of Pinot Noir in mind. Working with Muscat Bailey A for the first time required thoughtful experimentation and adaptation, yet this process ultimately allowed the grape’s character to shine. The result is a lively and refreshing expression of Muscat Bailey A, capturing the bright, fresh character distinctive to Ohira Town.
